Are we lasers?

My friend Shimon is getting a PhD in physics at Harvard. Lupe Fiasco is a rapper. Both love lasers. So when I read the liner notes from Lupe’s new album, Lasers (2011), I decided to get a physicist’s perspective.

On lasers and losers, from Lupe's new album

Shimon is awesome. And so are two or three songs off Lupe’s new album.

However, it’s critical to know how stifling and pop-focused the record label was in the production and marketing of the album.  Read this for some context. Even the “Lasers Manifesto” appears to be more or less a gimmick. In light of those constraints, I hope Shimon can forgive Mr. Fiasco for some of the slight scientific inaccuracies.

Here is the studio-mandated, radio-friendly, Modest Mouse sampling “The Show Goes On”. I’ll save some of the deeper tracks for another post. But I love this one for the Oakland-to-Auckland reference (which you’ll also find in this Hieroglyphics jam at 2:47). Enjoy.

    Excellent post.

Mr. Kolkowitz’s insights were quite eloquent. I look forward to future expert interviews to shine light on the veracity of hip hop lyrics.

Thanks for helping make rap a little more “concious” one post at a time.

P.S. I can’t wait to read an analysis of “all black everything”
